DPWH formally announced the implementation of the Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge Project.

The DPWH has formally signed an agreement for the Detail Engineering Design of the Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge Project with their chosen contractors, last October. The project is a 32.15 kilometers four lane Bridge which will begin from Brgy. Alas-asin in Mariveles, Bataan passing Manila Bay and concluding in Brgy. Timalan, Naic, Cavite. The bridge project has started last November 2020 and is expected to be completed on January 2022.

Having Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Ltd (Arup) as the appointed consultant of the DPWH, the feasibility of the project has been investigated and the preliminary designs have been prepared.

Once again, the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP), through the able leadership and guidance of its President, VADM. Eduardo Ma. R. Santos, AFP (Ret.), contributed to the success of this undertaking that is foreseen to benefit its neighbors, the people of Bataan. MAAP was officially commissioned by Arup and accredited by DPWH to design, develop, and execute the needed simulation exercises to assess the maneuverability of the simulated vessels along the proposed navigation channel traversing the proposed bridge crossing under various met-ocean and environmental conditions. The overall objective is to gain approval from the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for the proposed navigation clearances.

Using MAAP's Full Mission Bridge Simulator on a Motion Platform System, the proposed bridge was superimposed on the designated coordinates using the Manila Bay Port database Area that was originally developed by MAAP for use in Navigation Simulator training of its students and trainees. The project also marked the first time that our Navigation Simulators specifically designed for Maritime Education and Training were used for actual research purposes. The implementation of the project was managed and overseen by Engr. Gerardo Ramon S. Galang, MAAP IT Director. The simulations were conducted by MAAP key individuals including Capt. Mity Jan Bariacto of the MAAP Simulation Center, and Mr. Rex Saldana of MIITD, together with representatives from DPWH, Arup, PCG, PPA, and the Manila and Davao Pilot Associations.

One of the projects which is also assigned to ARUP in partnership with MAAP is the Feasibility Study for the Samal Island - Davao City Connector Bridge (SIDC). The bridge will impact the vessel traffic using the Pakiputan Strait, which will be required to use the navigation span, proposed to be a 250 m span extradosed bridge.
